Jesus Our Kinsman Redeemer: Trusting God for Extravagant Love

By Pao Viola Mbewe

“For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” — Romans 10:13 (NIV)

What does it mean to trust God for extravagant love?

In Scripture, a kinsman-redeemer was a relative who stepped in to rescue a family member in crisis. In the book of Ruth, Boaz redeems Ruth’s future. But the ultimate Kinsman Redeemer is Jesus Christ — the One who steps into our brokenness and pays the price we could never afford.

What Is a Kinsman Redeemer?

A kinsman-redeemer is someone close enough to care and strong enough to rescue.

That’s the heart of the Gospel.

Jesus doesn’t stand at a distance. He enters our mess, restores dignity, and redeems what feels lost — whether it’s hope, identity, purpose, or peace. His love is not cautious. It’s generous. Intentional. Extravagant.

My Story: Redeemed Through Every Season

Looking back over five decades of life — education, marriage, motherhood, migration, career pauses, and fresh starts — I see one consistent thread: God was always there.

When I balanced family and career decisions.
When I paused ambitions to nurture my children.
When financial limitations redirected my plans.
When I stepped away from a demanding role at PricewaterhouseCoopers to prioritise my daughters.
When I turned 50 after losing six siblings under that same age.

Through every high and low, Jesus was my Kinsman Redeemer — sustaining, guiding, and providing.

Even when I didn’t have a visible support network, I was never unsupported. I was upheld by Abba Father.

Called to Love the Broken Into Wholeness

Trusting God for extravagant love doesn’t stop at receiving it — we are called to reflect it.

Over time, I began to understand my mandate:

  • Repairer of the breach
  • Restorer of what has been ruined
  • Lover of the broken
  • Resuscitator of fading hope

This calling isn’t glamorous. It often means entering uncomfortable spaces — the “sticky, stinky, and muddy” places of life — and simply being present. Listening to silent pain. Seeing hurt beneath the surface. Extending grace where rejection once lived.

That is how our Kinsman Redeemer loves us. And that is how we love in return.

The Isaiah 58 Assignment

God’s extravagant love is practical. It restores foundations. It rebuilds generations. It transforms lives from the inside out.

When we trust Him fully, we discover that:

  • Our identity is secure in Christ.
  • Our worth is not defined by career titles.
  • Our legacy is shaped through obedience and love.
  • Our story becomes evidence of His grace.

Turning 50 wasn’t just a milestone — it was Jubilee. A reminder that redemption is ongoing and God’s faithfulness spans generations.

You Are Not Alone in Your Journey

If you are in a season of waiting, rebuilding, grieving, or rediscovering your purpose — know this:

You have a Kinsman Redeemer.
You are seen.
You are known.
You are loved extravagantly.
